What can I make with chicken breast and pasta?

It's 6pm, you've got chicken breast in the fridge and a packet of pasta in the cupboard, and you need dinner sorted. Those two ingredients are a brilliant foundation, but the real question isn't what recipe to follow, it's what else you've already got that can turn them into something proper tonight.

Most recipe sites will hand you a shopping list for one specific dish. But if you've got cream in the fridge or a tin of tomatoes in the back of the cupboard, you're already halfway to something completely different. The trick is matching your chicken and pasta to whatever's actually there, not the other way round.

Quick creamy directions

If you've got cream, crème fraîche or even a soft cheese knocking about, you're looking at a creamy pasta that comes together in one pan. Cook your chicken until it's golden, slice it up, then build a sauce with your dairy, a bit of stock if you have it, and whatever herbs or garlic are lying around. Toss it all through your cooked pasta and you've got something rich and satisfying without needing to follow someone else's exact method.

Bacon or pancetta in the fridge tips this into carbonara territory. Eggs and a bit of parmesan (or any hard cheese, really) finish it off. The point is that your kitchen probably holds the pieces already.

Tomato-based options

A tin of tomatoes opens up a different route entirely. Brown your chicken, throw in onions or garlic if you have them, tip in the tomatoes and let everything simmer while the pasta cooks. You can keep it simple or add olives, capers, dried herbs, peppers, whatever needs using. It's endlessly flexible and works whether you want something light or a proper bake with cheese melted over the top.

This is where a recipe list falls short. It can't see that you've got half a jar of pesto, a bag of spinach wilting in the drawer, or a lemon that's been sitting there all week. The app can, and that's the difference between following instructions and actually using what you own.

Garlic and lemon routes

If your cupboard's lighter on sauces but you've got oil, garlic and a lemon, you can build something fresh and sharp. Pan-fry the chicken with plenty of garlic, squeeze over lemon juice at the end, and toss it through pasta with a bit of the cooking water to bring it together. Parsley, rocket, or any soft herb you have will lift it. Even frozen peas stirred through at the last minute add colour and sweetness.

This style works beautifully when you want something quick that doesn't feel heavy, and it's the kind of thing that adapts to whatever green veg or cheese you happen to have open.

Baked pasta ideas

When you've got a bit more time or you're cooking for a few people, a pasta bake makes sense. Cooked chicken and pasta, mixed with any kind of sauce (tomato, cream, or even just stock and cheese), then finished in the oven until it's golden and bubbling. You can stir through frozen veg, leftover ham, or whatever needs eating. It's forgiving and uses up odds and ends without any fuss.

The real advantage of using an app that sees your whole kitchen is that it won't send you to the shop for one missing ingredient. It builds tonight's dinner from what's actually there, including the things you forgot you had.
